Lesson one

Posture & the push-pull drill

Before you write a single letter, your arm has to learn the motion. Today's lesson is entirely about the muscle movement underneath every Spencerian stroke โ€” no alphabet yet, on purpose.

Day 1 ยท Posture & the push-pull drill
Runtime โ€” 18:42

Follow alongToday's drill notes

Grab a pencil, your Day 1 practice sheet, and a flat surface. Sit with both feet on the floor and the paper angled slightly โ€” the video shows you exactly how.

  1. Warm up with 3 rows of continuous ovals, keeping your wrist still and moving from the arm.
  2. Practice the push-pull line down the full width of the page, ten times.
  3. Combine oval and push-pull into the connected drill shown at 11:20 in the video.
  4. Finish with one relaxed row at your own pace โ€” this is the one to compare against Day 3.

Don't worry about neatness today. The goal is a loose, repeatable arm movement โ€” the letters come later.

My push-pull line got shakier toward the end but the ovals felt good by row three. Excited for tomorrow.

Did the drill twice โ€” once at the desk, once standing at the counter. Standing felt way more natural for the arm movement.

This is exactly the kind of drill-first teaching I was hoping for. My grandmother would approve.
